MARCONI HOTEL ROME · SURROUNDINGS · OPERA THEATER

The Opera House Theater is found in the historical center of Rome not far from the main train station Termini. It was built in 1879 and is also known as the Costanzi Theater getting its name from Domenico Costanzi, the original contractor of the building. The architect chosen for the job by Costanzi was Achile Sfondrini from Milano. Sfondrini finished the job in less than 2 years and the theater was inaugurated on November 27th, 1880 with a performance by the famous Italian composer Rossini.
At this time the theater had a seating capacity of a little over 2000 which included 3 tiers of box seating, an amphitheatre and two separate galleries all surmounted with a dome and splendid frescoes.
In 1907, the theater was purchased by the International and National Theater Society (Società Teatrale Internazionale e Nazionale) represtned by the impresario Walter Mocchi.

From 1912 to 1926, Emma Carelli, Mocchi's wife, managed the theater and brilliantly staged events first time events which gave the Theater fame in all of Italy.
In 1926 the theater was purchased by the Municipla of Roma and its name was changed to the Teatro Reale dell'Opera or Royal Opera House. It was closed for restorations for 2 years and reopened again on Febraury 27th, 1928.

The restorations included a number of changes to the entrance, completely moved to another part of the theater, the amphitheatre and the interiors. An exquisite chandelier, measuring 18 feet in diameter and composed of 27,000 crystal drops, was also added giving the final touch of elegance to the new Royal Opera House.
Remodelling occurred again in 1958 by the City council of Rome and reopened dramatically with a performance of Norma starring Maria Callas.
The prestige of the Opera House has continued throughout the years and boasts world wide recognition for lovers of Opera.
In summer the Theater of the Opera stages performances in various outdoor venues around Rome but regular season performances are held from late Autumn to late Spring with ticket prices ranging from about €16 to €120 for regular performances.
